Who Should Apply for the MCG Scholarship Program?

The MCG Scholarship Program is open to students, emerging professionals, and enthusiasts who share a passion for mid-century modernism and are actively pursuing careers or projects in this niche. If you’re inspired by the timeless beauty and innovation of mid-century design and architecture, this scholarship is for you.

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Are Enrolled in a Relevant Program: You must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited program in a field such as architecture, interior design, preservation studies, furniture/industrial design, journalism, or other related disciplines.

  • Demonstrate a Passion for Mid-Century Modernism: Whether through coursework, personal projects, or community involvement, applicants should show a deep appreciation for the aesthetics, principles, and cultural significance of mid-century design.

  • Showcase Creativity and Dedication: Candidates should have a proven ability to think creatively, solve problems, or innovate within their chosen field. Examples might include designing a project inspired by mid-century architecture, writing articles on its cultural impact, or restoring vintage furniture.

  • Are Advocates for Preservation: Applicants who have contributed to preserving mid-century landmarks or are committed to protecting this design era for future generations are highly encouraged to apply.

  • Seek to Make a Lasting Impact: We’re looking for individuals who aspire to elevate mid-century modernism within their communities, whether by educating others, influencing design trends, or bringing underrepresented stories to light.

Ideal candidates will also:

  • Display Leadership Qualities: Demonstrate initiative and leadership in projects or teams that embody and promote mid-century values. This could involve participation in high school programs such as the Technology Student Association, where students innovate within design and architecture disciplines at local, state, and national levels, or taking on active roles in community and state-funded college programs. Examples include engaging in architectural or interior design initiatives, such as the University of Idaho’s annual Chair Affair event, where students showcase their craftsmanship and creativity. Leadership may also be reflected in mentoring peers, spearheading restoration efforts, or organizing events that celebrate mid-century design and its cultural significance.

  • Show a Commitment to Learning: Demonstrate a proactive approach to personal and professional growth by embracing mentorship opportunities and participating in professional development. This could include working with experienced architects or designers on mid-century restoration projects, attending workshops focused on preserving mid-century landmarks, or enrolling in specialized courses like mid-century furniture design at a local art institute.

Candidates might also engage with industry events such as the Palm Springs Modernism Week, where they can learn from thought leaders and immerse themselves in mid-century culture.

  • Actively seeking feedback from mentors, participating in skill-building programs like the NCIDQ certification for interior designers, or attending seminars on sustainable preservation techniques further reflects this dedication to learning. A strong candidate continuously seeks opportunities to deepen their understanding and refine their craft, showing both curiosity and a commitment to excellence.

  • Have a Vision for the Future: Articulate a clear and inspiring plan for using your talents and knowledge to make a meaningful impact within the mid-century community. This vision might include preserving architectural treasures by launching a firm specializing in mid-century restoration, designing innovative furniture pieces that reinterpret classic forms for modern living, or creating educational programs to teach future generations about mid-century principles and their relevance today.

For example, you might aim to collaborate with local historical societies to advocate for the landmark designation of mid-century structures, develop a sustainable materials initiative inspired by mid-century design philosophy, or publish a series of books or articles that explore the cultural and social narratives tied to the mid-century era.

A strong candidate demonstrates not just a passion for mid-century modernism, but also a forward-thinking approach that connects its timeless aesthetics and values to evolving contemporary needs, ensuring its legacy endures and continues to inspire.
