MCG Archives: The Joel E. Ferris II House, Spokane, Washington

Updated: Feb 12

Nestled within what was once the historic Graves Estate on Spokane’s South Hill, the Joel E. Ferris II House is a stunning example of mid-century modern architecture seamlessly integrated with nature. Designed by acclaimed Spokane architect Bruce Walker in 1955, this masterpiece embraces clean lines, expansive windows, and a naturalistic setting, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out.

The home’s low, linear profile contrasts sharply with the grand historic mansions nearby, embodying the modernist principles of simplicity, openness, and functionality. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer uninterrupted sightlines to the one-acre wooded lot, reinforcing the harmony between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. Notably, renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin—famous for his work on the Portland Open Space Sequence—designed the outdoor spaces, including a striking rock garden nestled between the house and carport.

Despite undergoing three major renovations, the Ferris House has retained its architectural integrity. The first two expansions (in 1961 and 1963) were designed by Bruce Walker himself, preserving the original vision, while a third renovation in 1982 was executed by modernist architect Bill Trogdon, ensuring a continued commitment to modern design principles.

Beyond their home, Mary Jean and Joel Ferris were pivotal figures in Spokane’s mid-century modern movement. In 1950, they founded Joel, Inc., a high-end furniture and design store that introduced Spokane residents to cutting-edge modernist pieces. Their efforts increased local awareness and appreciation of contemporary design, with many of the products they showcased now part of museum collections.

Today, the Joel E. Ferris II House remains one of Spokane’s most significant mid-century residences, a testament to the visionary architects and design advocates who shaped the city’s modern aesthetic.
