Fireclay Tile: Setting the Standard in Sustainable, Handcrafted Tile Design

Updated: Feb 17

A Legacy Rooted in Craftsmanship

Founded in 1986 by Paul Burns in San Jose, California, Fireclay Tile began with a vision to create high-quality, handcrafted tiles. Burns, whose family has a history in the tile industry dating back to the 1920s, brought generations of knowledge to his work. In 1991, Fireclay relocated to Aromas, California, to expand its production capabilities, setting the stage for significant growth.

Under the leadership of CEO Eric Edelson, who joined in 2009, Fireclay shifted its business model to focus on direct sales to architects, designers, and homeowners. This strategic pivot, coupled with an innovative employee stock ownership program, has propelled the company into a position of industry leadership.

Fireclay Tile Is a Pioneer in Sustainability

Fireclay Tile has been a trailblazer in sustainable manufacturing since 1988, when it became the first tile company to introduce 100% lead-free glazes. This groundbreaking initiative set a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in the industry.

Continuing its commitment to sustainability, Fireclay has maintained Climate Neutral certification since 2020, offsetting all carbon emissions while reducing emissions by more than 50% through operational efficiencies and kiln optimization.

Handcrafted Excellence

Fireclay’s product range includes ceramic tiles, handpainted tiles, and thin glazed bricks. Every piece is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring unparalleled quality and design.

With production facilities in Aromas, California, and Spokane, Washington, Fireclay Tile is the only company in the world producing 100% of its ceramic, brick, and glass tiles in the United States. This dedication to craftsmanship reflects the company’s commitment to supporting local economies and maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Fireclay Tile is a Certified B Corporation

As the first tile company to achieve Benefit Corporation certification, Fireclay Tile demonstrates its commitment to social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. The company’s employee ownership structure ensures inclusive growth and shared success, with 30% of the business owned by its workforce.

Giving Back to the Community

Fireclay Tile is deeply invested in community development. The company donates 1% of its tile production square footage to non-profit organizations, amounting to over 35,000 square feet of tile valued at $677,000 to date. Additionally, Fireclay hosts an annual volunteer day, where employees dedicate time to local service projects, further reinforcing its role as a community partner.

Setting Standards for the Future

Through its unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability, and social responsibility, Fireclay Tile continues to set industry standards. Offering beautiful, durable, environmentally friendly, and ethically produced products, Fireclay stands as a model for what is possible when craftsmanship and innovation meet a mission-driven purpose.
